빛의 심연
The Abyss of Light
바다는 단순한 풍경이 아니라 시간이 고이는 자리이자 감정이 밀려드는 마음의 지형이다. 내가 그리는 바다는 언제나 빛을 머금고 있다. 햇살이 스며드는 물결 아래 어둠조차 숨을 쉬는 그곳에 생명의 숨결이 머문다. 바다는 자궁을 채운 양수처럼 양분과 온기를 품고 생명을 잉태한다. 그 바다에 빛과 어둠이 교차하는 그 심연 속에 선인장들을 심었다.
선인장은 원래 사막의 식물이다. 건조한 땅에서 살아남는 법을 아는, 모진 날씨 속에서도 꽃을 피우는 생명이다. 바닷속 선인장은 상처를 안은 채 피어나는 생명이면서 물속에서도 뿌리내리려 애쓰는 고요한 의지이다. 그것은 생존이 아니라 사랑을 기억하는 방식이기도 하다. 나는 그 바다에 생명을 담고 빛을 새기고 기도를 묻었다. 어둠이 닿아야 드러나는 빛은 침묵 속에서 피어나는 노래다. 바다는 어둠 속에서도 빛을 품는다. 상처를 품은 생명이 그럼에도 살아가듯.
시간이 흐르며 바다는 점차 형태가 녹아내렸다. 화면에는 흘러내리는 물감의 흔적만이 남았다. 나에게 흘러내림은 물의 형상이 아니라 바다의 움직임이며 감정의 흐름이다. 눈물처럼 흐르고, 기억처럼 번지며, 시간처럼 스며든다. 바다가 심연의 은유였다면, 흘러내림은 그 심연이 움직이는 방식이다. 시간이 흐르며 선인장과 물고기 또한 형태를 벗고 화면 속으로 스며들었다. 남은 것은 상처를 견디는 의지와 삶이 남긴 흔적들, 그리고 어둠 속에서도 끝내 사라지지 않는 빛의 흔적이다.
작품 속 야광은 단순한 시각적 효과가 아니다. 그것은 어둠이 찾아와야 비로소 드러나는 빛이다. 낮에는 보이지 않지만 밤이 되면 모습을 드러내듯, 희망 또한 가장 어두운 순간에 그 빛이 더 밝게 느껴지곤 한다. 나는 야광을 통해 상처를 지우는 것이 아니라, 상처 속에서도 끝내 사라지지 않는 빛의 가능성을 이야기하고자 한다.
The sea is not merely a landscape. It is a place where time gathers and emotions ebb and flow—a terrain of the heart. The sea I paint is always filled with light. Beneath the waves touched by sunlight, even darkness breathes, and the pulse of life quietly remains. Like the amniotic fluid that nurtures life within the womb, the sea carries warmth and nourishment, giving birth to new life. Within this abyss, where light and darkness intersect, I planted cacti.
A cactus is a plant of the desert. It survives in harsh and arid conditions, yet still finds a way to bloom. The underwater cactus is a living being that blossoms while carrying its wounds, a quiet will striving to take root even beneath the water. It is not merely about survival, but a way of remembering love.
Into this sea, I placed life, engraved light, and buried prayers. The light that reveals itself only when touched by darkness is a song blooming in silence. The sea carries light even within darkness, just as wounded life continues to live on despite everything.
Over time, the sea gradually began to dissolve its form. The canvas was left with only the traces of flowing paint.
For me, these drippings are not the shape of water, but the movement of the sea and the flow of emotion. They run like tears, spread like memories, and seep through time. If the sea was a metaphor for the abyss, then the drippings are the way that abyss moves.
The cacti and fish, too, gradually shed their forms and dissolved into the surface of the painting. What remains is the will to endure wounds, the traces left behind by life, and the lingering light that refuses to disappear, even within darkness.
The phosphorescent glow in my work is not merely a visual effect. It is a light that reveals itself only when darkness arrives. Just as it remains unseen during the day and emerges at night, hope, too, often shines more brightly in our darkest moments. Through this glow, I do not seek to erase wounds, but to speak of the possibility of a light that endures within them—a light that refuses to disappear.
