Chapter I : 상처(Wound)
Self-Portrait of Thorns
A cactus is born with thorns. Its thorns do not exist to push others away, but are traces of survival—marks formed in response to a harsh and unforgiving environment.
As I passed through countless seasons of my own, I, too, came to carry thorns. Wounds sometimes made me sharp. My thorns have hurt others, and I myself have been wounded by them.
Yet a cactus blooms even in the heart of the desert. It takes root in the driest soil, endures the longest stretches of time, and eventually produces flowers that are brief, yet beautiful. The Cactus Girl is a self-portrait of my former self—an existence that lives while carrying its wounds, at times sharp, yet never giving up on the possibility of blooming. Thorns are not wounds. They are traces of having survived.
Wounds do not disappear; they leave scars behind. Yet wounds do more than break us—they create new forms of beauty. Tears become water, wounds become nourishment, and from them new flowers emerge. Scars, in turn, bear witness to the time we have endured.
Through the cactus, I do not seek to tell a story of overcoming wounds. Rather, I seek to speak of the beauty of those who continue to live while carrying them.
